Downed power lines forced the closure of a part of the interstate in southeastern Connecticut at approximately 3:30 a.m. on Tuesday, April 2, according to officials. The roadway was temporarily blocked by downed wires, before I-95 reopened in time for the morning commute.
Prior to Tuesday’s evening commute, Groton Utilities announced that I-95 had been reopened, but Connecticut State Police cautioned that it would once again be closed for an hour at approximately 6:15 p.m. to make additional repairs.
“I-95 exit 87 northbound and exit 88 southbound lanes will be closed for approximately one hour starting at 6:15 p.m.,” they wrote in an email. "Motorists need to seek alternate routes.”
According to Groton Utilities, the road closure was forced by a crane installing new signage over I-95, which struck power lines that belong to the company. The downed lines also forced several local schools to close due to a lack of power and traffic that jammed area roadways as motorists attempted to detour.
“As a result multiple fires have been reported, electric power lines are down and there are multiple outages in Groton. Please standby as we identify exactly what the damage is and protect our public and traffic from the danger,” the company posted at 5 a.m. Tuesday.
